First Cruiser – Bavaria 38 vs Dufour 35

I'm currently in sunny Florida, on the hunt for my very first cruising sailboat. I've dipped my toes into charter sailing and enjoyed some coastal adventures, but now I'm ready to take the plunge and spend more extended time on the water, mostly sailing solo or with a buddy for some short coastal journeys, with a sprinkle of light offshore cruising thrown in for good measure

Right now, I'm kind of stuck between two boats that fit my budget:

- A Bavaria 38 from the early 2000s
- A Dufour 35 from the late '90s

I'd love to hear your thoughts on how they handle, what the build quality is like, how comfortable they are for longer stays, and how easy they are to maintain. Any tips or experiences you can share would be super helpful

It sounds like you're in a great spot, though I understand the choice between boats can be tough!
Both boats from those eras offer good value, but considering your intent for some light offshore cruising in addition to coastal trips, I'd lean toward the Dufour 35 between the two.
I've found Dufours of that vintage tend to offer a more lively and responsive sailing experience, which can be particularly enjoyable when heading a bit further offshore.
They're often known for being well-built with solid hull construction.
While perhaps not as overtly spacious as a Bavaria of similar size, their layouts are typically very practical and comfortable for longer stays, and their sailing prowess can make the journey itself more rewarding.
Bavarias certainly offer generous interior volume and docile handling, but I think the Dufour's characteristics better align with your goal!

Bavaria 38s tend to be roomy and comfortable with decent build quality, making longer stays easier, while Dufour 35s are often praised for their handling and performance but might be a bit tighter below deck. Maintenance-wise, the Bavaria's larger size means a bit more upkeep, but parts are usually easy to find. If you prioritize comfort and space for longer trips, Bavaria edges out and if you want a nimble, sporty feel... Dufour's a great pick.
